Meet the Mechanics – James Roush

We depend on our vehicles every day. Not only to transport us from point A to point B, but also to take care of us, to make memories, like bringing family together for road trips. Yet when it comes to getting our vehicles repaired, all too often we’re forced to leave our cars with strangers. And for this reason, getting our cars fixed can be anxiety provoking. Leave it with the wrong team and you get your car back with new problems—something we’ve all experienced at one point or another. That’s why trust is so important. And at Gateway, this is something we understand.

As a family owned business we operate different than most automotive businesses. Unlike the national chain focused on the amount of service, our business is focused on taking care of the people we see everyday, both returning customers and employees (at Gateway the shortest amount of time one of our mechanics has been with us is seven years!). And above anything else, we’re driven by people. We earn loyalty with skilled, thorough work and straightforward salesmanship–our ethic is never sacrificed for profit.

These are the things that make us different. And to make that difference even more apparent, we want to give the stage to our team—the people that do the hard work that keeps us going and keeps you on the road. We asked our team a quick series of questions to help you get to know them a little bit better.

What do you like about working at Gateway? I like the people I work with, it’s a culture of understanding, like a family. If you need to take care of something, we have each others backs.

What is something in the automotive industry that you want to fix? For me, I think it’s the misconception that mechanical work is as easy as hooking it up to a computer and knowing what’s wrong with it. Unfortunately it’s not, I wish! (Laughing) It’s something that still requires continuous learning with the advances in the automotive industry.

What is your past experience, for working in your position? I’ve been in the mechanical field for over 20 years throughout different businesses along the way.

What do you like about working at Gateway? I like the people I work with, it’s a culture of understanding, like a family. If you need to take care of something, we have each others backs.

What’s something you want to do that you’ve never done before? I’ve done a lot (laughing), that’s a tough one. I’d really like to go to Germany and experience their culture, I haven’t been to that side of the world since I was a kid.

What’s your background? My dad was in the Military, so I moved all over. Favorite place you’ve lived? Yeah, hands down it would be Oahu, Hawaii.

Have you met anyone famous? (Laughing) Probably not anyone that “famous”.

What are the values that drive you? Hard work, loyalty, honesty, and respect. Treat people as you want to be treated.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working? I like to going to concerts, mainly country, and spending time with my family and daughter. Oh, and I really like to barbecue (laughing), smoking ribs or brisket especially.
